The angel shows John why not to be overwhelmed by what he saw in verse 6 (Babylon getting drunk on the blood of the martyrs). Because he shows him the mystery that is the reality behind the scenes: the Beast and Babylon are defeated, and Christians overcome them all now and in the end through Jesus Christ the King of kings and Lord of lords, as highlighted by Rev. 17:14, the summary of the entire Revelation.
